Harward Exonerated by DNA Evidence

Keith Allan Harward was released Friday, April 8th after being exonerated by DNA evidence. The Virginia Supreme Court declared Harward to be innocent the day prior. Harward was convicted in 1982, largely due to testimony by forensic odontologists who testified “to medical certainty” that Harward’s teeth imprints matched the bite marks on a rape victim. Harward’s exoneration comes shortly after Steven Chaney’s exoneration last October in Texas, which was also based on debunked bite-mark science. In response to this exoneration, Adam Freeman, president of the American Board of Forensic Odontology, has encouraged review of all individual cases in which a member of the Board testified. More information about this case can be found in this Washington Post article.
